About this event

Agenda
This will be a Zoom meeting at Noon

11:50am-12:00pm - Pre-Session Waiting Room
12:00pm-1:00pm - Presentation, JetBrains giveaway

Build Your First Real-Time Voice Agent
Real‑time voice agents sound simple in demos but fall apart the moment real users show up. Latency creeps in, people talk over the agent, accents and background noise wreck the transcript, and the whole experience slides straight into the uncanny valley.

This hands‑on session walks through building a production‑ready voice agent end to end using .NET, low‑latency speech‑to‑text, responsive LLM orchestration, and fast speech synthesis. You’ll learn how to handle barge‑in interruptions, reliably detect end‑of‑turn boundaries, and add empythetic emotional responsiveness that makes the agent feel natural without slowing it down.

Hacktoberfest 2026: DSM Web Geeks Hack Day

Let’s get hacking!
Join DSM Web Geeks on Monday, October 12th at 6:30 PM at Source Allies as we celebrate Hacktoberfest with an evening of open source, collaboration, and coding.

Hacktoberfest is a celebration of open source that brings developers together to contribute, learn, and support the projects and communities that make so much of modern software possible. Whether you’ve contributed to dozens of open source projects or have never opened a pull request before, you’re welcome to join us.

What’s Happening?
We’ll kick things off with a quick introduction to contributing to open source, including how to find a project, choose an issue, and work through the contribution and pull request process.

*Then we’ll start hacking!*

Bring your laptop and a project you’d like to contribute to, or join up with other developers at the event. We’ll have time to work individually, pair with others, ask questions, and share what we’re working on.

Have an open source project of your own that could use some help? Bring it! We’d love to give local maintainers a chance to introduce their projects and connect with potential contributors.

You don’t need to be an open source expert to participate. Documentation improvements, bug fixes, tests, accessibility improvements, and small features can all be valuable contributions. This is a chance to learn the contribution process in a friendly environment and meet other developers along the way.

What to Bring
Bring a laptop and anything else you need to code comfortably. If you already have a GitHub account, make sure you can log in before the event.

Don’t have a project in mind? That’s okay. We’ll help you find something to work on when you arrive.

*Food and drinks will be provided.*

3 Illusions in Software Delivery with Joel Tosi

  • Wed Oct 14, 4:30 PM – 6 PM
  • F&G
  • 19 going
About this event

We are thrilled to welcome Joel Tosi — co-author of Signals & Levers (ITRevolution, September 2026), Coaching for Learning, and Create Your Dojo — who helps organizations evolve through learning by blending systems thinking, agile, lean, and DevOps practices. He joins ProductTank Des Moines ahead of his Tech Fuse Des Moines keynote.

Special thanks to F&G for sponsoring the venue and for having a senior leader kick off and welcome the group.

Overview:
Software delivery is influenced by a myriad of factors - internal ability to execute, customer demands, and an every shifting market for starters. But software delivery is also full of illusions, making it more and more difficult to see what is actually happening!

In this session, we will look at 3 of the most common illusions - Illusion of Progress, Illusion of Predictability, and Illusion of Control. We will explore the signals that tell us we are under these illusions and, most importantly, how to break free.

Want to understand why all of those meetings aren't helping? What about all of that planning? How about why all that agile stuff you are doing (in your own special way) seems to make things slower? And how about that eternal debate around tech debt vs shipping features?

Note: Guests need to register 48 hours in advance of the meeting.

Schedule:
4:30 - 5:00 Kickoff, Welcome and Networking
5:00 - 6:00 Session

This event does includes a cost. You must register with ISU to attend.
ISU Event Details

This year’s event will focus on leading change with business analytics. Through real-world case studies and practitioner insights, speakers will share how organizations move from insight to action, from analysis to implementation, and from data-informed thinking to measurable business results.

Reimagining Analytics Delivery for the AI Era

About this event

As AI and advanced analytics capabilities continue to expand, many organizations are looking for ways to deliver greater business impact while helping their teams develop broader skills and stronger collaboration practices.

Principal Financial has been experimenting with a model that brings business intelligence analysts, analytics engineers, and data scientists together to work as an integrated team on shared business challenges. While still early in the journey, they are already seeing changes in how work gets done, how knowledge is shared, and how individuals approach problem-solving.
This session would explore:

* Why we chose to create cross-disciplinary teams.
* How the model works in practice.
* The role of T-shaped learning in developing more adaptable analytics professionals.
* How collaboration between BI, analytics engineering, and data science influences solution design and delivery.
* Examples of knowledge transfer and skill development occurring across disciplines.
* Early lessons learned, successes, and challenges.
* Observed changes in team behaviors, decision-making, and ownership.
* How integrated teams may help organizations scale AI and advanced analytics capabilities more effectively rate with peers.

Building a physical product in the age of AI

About this event

What happens when a software developer decides to build a physical product?

In this session, Levi Rosol will share the story behind GridSmith—a modular tabletop terrain system that started as a personal frustration with existing products and evolved into a real business. Along the way, AI became much more than a coding assistant. It became a design partner, a CAD tutor, a rubber duck, a technical writer, a marketing assistant, and an endless source of ideas.

We'll explore the entire journey: identifying the problem worth solving, designing hundreds of iterations of a physical product, learning OpenSCAD through AI-assisted development, optimizing for 3D printing and manufacturing, building an e-commerce website through "vibe coding," and launching a product that people can actually buy.

This isn't a session about replacing developers with AI. It's about how modern AI tools dramatically lower the barrier between an idea and a finished product, allowing a single person to wear the hats of engineer, product designer, manufacturer, and entrepreneur.

Whether you're a developer, maker, or simply curious about what AI can enable, you'll leave with practical insights, honest lessons learned, and hopefully the confidence to start building that idea you've been putting off.

Fraud Detection on the Elliptic Bitcoin Dataset: Graphs, Leakage, and Topology

About this event

Pyowa returns to Source Allies on Tuesday, October 27th from 5:30–7pm with Dave Keller presenting a hands-on look at fraud detection, machine learning, and the importance of questioning results that seem a little too good.

In this session, Dave will explore his work using the Elliptic Bitcoin transaction dataset to investigate fraud detection. When his initial models produced near-perfect performance, it raised an important question: was the model actually learning meaningful patterns, or was data leakage influencing the results?

Dave will walk through rebuilding the experiment with a temporal train/validation/test split and establishing logistic regression and Random Forest baselines. He’ll also cover how statistical techniques including Spearman correlation, mutual information, and Kolmogorov-Smirnov tests helped investigate relationships between features and time.

Rather than chasing the highest possible model score, this talk is about questioning results, testing alternative explanations, and understanding what the evidence does and does not support.

Hosted at Source Allies. Food and drinks will be provided.

Speaker Bio: Dave is a court researcher and aspiring data scientist with a background in mathematics. He is currently pursuing the MITx MicroMasters in Statistics and Data Science and develops projects focused on machine learning, fraud detection, graph analytics, and Python.

Tokens, Tickets, & Thievery - Authentication Material Theft for Privilege Escalation and Defense Planning

About this event

Doors open at 6 PM.

7:00 PM · Tokens, Tickets, & Thievery - Authentication Material Theft for Privilege Escalation and Defense Planning — Andrew Ware
We all know that you’re supposed to protect privileged accounts with strong passwords and MFA, but what if the authentication process itself can be undermined? In this talk I’ll explore how stolen authentication material can be used to hijack accounts without ever needing to obtain the actual credentials. We’ll look at classic Kerberos ticket theft and Microsoft Entra access token theft.

The lesson for defenders: Strong credentials are only part of the defense strategy. The entire authentication process needs to be treated as privileged from start to finish.

429 Problems: Scaling Systems Without Breaking Everything

About this event

We’ll explore the real world tradeoffs of parallel processing through a case study of an AI pipeline that processes and analyzes large volumes of user-submitted political opinions. The system performs moderation, embedding generation, and downstream analysis using a distributed, event-driven architecture built on AWS.

In this session attendees will learn how to design scalable, resilient pipelines using parallel processing while avoiding common pitfalls like rate limits, throttling, and cascading failures. They’ll leave with practical patterns for building fault-tolerant systems, balancing throughput with external constraints, and handling partial failures gracefully.

We’ll break down how parallelism improves throughput and responsiveness, while also examining the less obvious challenges it introduces, such as rate limiting, back pressure, partial failures, and data consistency.

While the case study uses AWS services, the architectural principles are cloud-agnostic and applicable to any distributed system handling high-throughput workloads.

The SaaS Startup Dependency Graph

About this event

Launching a SaaS product takes much more than writing great code. Before customers can sign up, there are business, financial, security, and infrastructure decisions that all have to happen in the right order. Miss a dependency, and you can lose days untangling problems that could have been avoided.

Join us on Tuesday, August 26th, as Travis Smith presents "The SaaS Startup Dependency Graph." Travis will walk through the real sequence of tasks involved in launching a SaaS business, from forming an LLC and obtaining an EIN to setting up banking, cloud identity, payment processing, and a secure production environment. Along the way, he'll highlight the privacy, identity, and architectural decisions that are easiest to make early and most costly to change later.

Whether you're building a side project, launching a startup, or just interested in the operational side of software delivery, this session goes well beyond just the code.

As always, we'll have time for questions, discussion, and networking with fellow members of the DevOpsDSM community.

Hosted at Source Allies from 6:00–7:00 PM, with food, drinks, and a live stream available for remote attendees.

The Past Didn't Go Anywhere: Fundamentals > AI

About this event

For decades, our industry has predicted that the next wave of technology would replace software developers. From COBOL to the dot-com boom, DevOps, and now AI, each shift has promised to fundamentally change our profession.
Yet developers are still here.

The difference is that every wave has demanded new skills, not fewer developers. As AI continues to reshape software engineering, one thing has become increasingly clear: the developers who thrive will be the ones who understand the fundamentals.

Join CIJUG as Dustin Thostenson explores why design patterns, system thinking, effective communication, testing, and quality engineering remain just as important today as they've ever been. Rather than focusing on AI tools themselves, this session examines how developers can avoid common pitfalls like AI-generated technical debt, missed business outcomes, and systems that become increasingly difficult to understand and maintain.
You'll learn practical approaches to defining problems clearly, designing systems with well-defined responsibilities, and writing tests that build confidence instead of simply checking boxes.

About the Speaker
Dustin Thostenson is an independent consultant leading Delta3Consulting. Over the course of his career, he has served as a developer, mentor, trainer, and agile coach, with a passion for helping people grow and teams deliver better outcomes. Dustin also helps lead the Iowa .NET User Group and is an active volunteer in the Central Iowa technology community.

Trust, But Verify: Human-in-the-Loop for Agents That Actually Matter

About this event

AI agents are getting good at taking action. The hard part isn't making them capable, it's knowing when to make them stop.

In this talk we'll walk through the full spectrum of human-in-the-loop patterns, from lightweight inline confirmations to out-of-band permission gates to handing your agent a wallet with real money in it and more. Each pattern fits a different level of consequence, and knowing which to reach for is what separates demo agents from production ones. We'll cover the honest tradeoffs of latency, user experience, and trust so you can make the right call for your specific use case.

The entire talk is built around various live demos that escalate in stakes with every step. You'll leave with a mental model and working reference architecture you can apply the same day.

Beyond the YAML Spaghetti: Building App-Centric Systems with Radius

  • Wed Jul 22, 12 PM – 1 PM
  • Online

About this event

Modern cloud-native development is often less about writing code and more about "YAML plumbing." Between IaC templates, secret management, and Kubernetes manifests, the actual application logic gets buried under layers of infrastructure configuration. Why does our tooling force us to think about VPCs and subnets when we just want to connect a service to a database?

AI-assisted development has come a long way from simple autocomplete, but most developers are only scratching the surface of what's possible today. Join us as Kyle Hoehns demonstrates how modern AI development tools have evolved from helpful coding assistants into capable agents that can help build complete features with minimal human intervention. Drawing from more than a year of daily use on real client projects, Kyle will share his insights into how these tools fit into modern software development workflows.

This session is completely hands-on. Starting with an empty project, Kyle will build a real REST API feature live using tools such as Claude Code and GitHub Copilot. Along the way, you'll see how AI agents can assist with implementation, testing, iteration, and feature development while still keeping developers in control of the process.
